State-sponsored hackers targeting accounts of journalists and professors, Google warns

In recent cybersecurity news, social media reports have surfaced from users alarmed over receiving an alert from Google that reads: “Government-backed attackers may be trying to steal your password.” Google then identified prominent journalists and professors as the targets of the recent attempts. According to a spokesperson from the tech giant, the warning received by some users may have been prompted by hacking attempts detected in the past month. This may have been caused then by a phishing campaign of hackers tied to the Russian government.

In particular, Google warns users against clicking ‘harmful attachments, links to malicious software downloads, or links to fake websites that are designed to steal your passwords or other personal information’ received via email. While Google assures its users that its internal systems are secure, and signaling systems are in place to continuously monitor suspicious attempts and activities of accounts, Gmail users are highly encouraged to review and/or deploy their account security measures (e.g. password, 2-step verification).

To set-up the 2-step verification (two-factor authentication) on your account, you may refer to https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185839.
